Finance and Money - Spending, Saving or Investing - part 1

Welcome back! Let's say that after you pay your mortage/rent, your bills and all of your monthly groceries, you have 500$ left in your bank account (or whatever amount that you have, it doesn't really matter, as long as it's not negative 😀). What should you do with this money? Should you buy that nice watch that you've been wanting for a while now? Should you save this money? Maybe it would be best to invest it?   Here are, from my humble opinion, the most important decision factors to consider: your health - this is the most important thing! your age - time is the only thing that you can never get back! Money comes and goes, time is LIMITED! Also, we don't know how much of it we actually have. your current responsabilities - are you single or married? do you have kids? do you have to take care of your mom? etc. your primary income stream - is it stable or very volatile? in other words, do you have a stable job / business?  If you are single, with little or no majo...

Finance and Money - Dumb decisions I made

Look, I'm not a financial advisor. I'm not extremely rich. However, I know some things when it comes to finance and how the economic world works. When it comes to money I have self-educated myself, and still do, and have put into pratice everything that I talk about.  It would've been great if my family tought me some of these things when I was younger. Unfortunately, my mom and dad didn't know anything in terms of financial education / financial independence. All I got from them, in terms of financial education, was "get a job that pays well". That's it. So, as the title says, here are some financial mistakes I did during the years. Granted, I learned from each experience, but looking back, it would've been better had I chosen differently. The first thing I consider a mistake is "buying" a new car when I was almost 23 . To give you the full picture, I didn't have ANY money saved for buying a car - nothing for a down-payment. I had to ac...

Working out - My training program - part 1

Hello and welcome back 🙂 I talked here about general things about working out and I thought it’s a good idea to share with you my training regime. Maybe you can steal some ideas/exercises from it or just give it a try if you feel like it. Last year I switched my training program from one muscle group per workout to a custom PPL approach (push/pull/legs). My goal is to maintain my size and work on small improvements here and there. In other words, I’m relatively happy with the way I look but I strive to improve in some areas; as a small parentheses, I don’t know of any gym rat who is 100% happy with their physique 😀 - there’s always something that can be further improved/worked on. In this post I’ll talk about the  "Pull"  training that I do. The first thing I do, regardless of the specific training day, is a GOOD warm-up; I focus a lot on my shoulders, my elbows and my back. I’ll do a separate post about how to warm up properly, but, for now, just remember that I pay close ...

Working out - How many workouts per week?

You started working out, figured out what your goals are and now you’re wondering … how much is too much when it comes to training? Well, as with pretty much everything gym-related, it depends. “Why? Why does it always have to be complicated and why can’t I get a simple, straightforward answer?!” YOU! The answer why it’s not straightforward is … you 😀. How so, you may be wondering. We’re all different, physically as well as in terms of goals. Maybe you want to work only on having a 6-pack. Maybe someone wants to grow their entire muscle mass by 10%. Maybe someone just wants to get rid of some weight. Maybe you’re a beginner. Maybe you’re a seasoned lifter. Maybe your workouts are mid-sized when it comes to intensity. Maybe every workout you do you go 120%. That’s why “it depends” 😀 So, with that in mind, let’s take the above mentioned examples and try to create some categories.  First, let’s talk about the people who generally want to grow/increase muscle mass.  If yo...

Working out - Personal trainer

Something that quickly comes to mind when you start working out is “Should I get a personal trainer? If so, for how long?” Well, as with all things … it depends. Generally, it’s a very good idea to have a personal trainer when you start working out. This person should have the necessary experience, skill and knowledge in order for you to properly learn the correct techniques for each exercise. Kind of like when you learn to ride a bike and you have those helper wheels at the back. It’s also a good idea to start with a personal trainer so that, if you are working out alone, there is someone to help you out with some lifts when it really matters (e.g. you don’t get stuck under a barbell because you don’t know yet how much you can bench press) and prevent DI - dumb injuries 😀 However, I strongly encourage you to do your own research as well. Why? Well, it’s always nice when you just listen and execute what the trainer tells you, but what if there are better exercises that you could do? ...

Working out - Supplements

You started working out and now you think about reaching your goals faster; speeding up the process. You start searching the web and you get thousands of results for supplements and pills and protein bars and so on. You talk to someone at the gym who points you to another person who has “the best stuff”. Usually, this “best stuff” is dangerous and, in some places, illegal. Yeah, I’m talking about steroids.  There are only a few cases where you should take steroids and that’s only when prescribed by a doctor! If you have health problems and that’s what the doc gave you … fine; however, I’d say 99% of people working out and taking steroids DO NOT have a good reason for doing so. Do steroids work? Apparently yeah … just search online for famous bodybuilders who took this sh*t and see what they have to say.  The point is that for regular people, average Joes like you and me, steroids = very bad feng shui! Don’t do it … seriously, don’t touch that stuff. Now, going back to s...

Working out - first steps

You decided to start working out. That’s excellent news! You got yourself a gym membership or you bought some equipment and created your own wonderful gym in the basement, garage or wherever. Now … the journey begins (and hopefully, it will never end 😀) The first few months are critical in learning the basics and mastering technique.  For this reason, DO NOT go heavy with your exercise. I’d even suggest that you go really light for your first month of training. There is no shame in this.  What’s the point of throwing discs on the bar and trying to bench press, when you don’t know the proper technique?! All you’ll get is an injury (moderate or severe) and most likely you’ll stop lifting altogether. There’s good and there’s not good… that’s not good. A very important thing to keep in mind is that you are not there to impress anyone. The gym is not facebook or instagram or w/e. You are in the gym to improve yourself - both physically and mentally. That’s it.  The onl...
